Montreal synth artist d'Eon is carrying on in his Music for Keyboards mixtape series. The latest of these is Music for Keyboards Vol. V: Robby, which is available now for free.
The collection's 14 tracks are a little more sonically diverse than some past instalments in the series, since they range from jittery electro to sparkling washes of ambience to classically inspired piano. Despite the stylistic range, however, all of the songs were inspired by a phone system, and the arrangements include various keypad tones, robot-sounding voices, and other fibre-optic communications.
The musician said in a statement [via The Fader], "It's inspired by, and heavily samples, a real but unattributed phone system with tens of thousands of extensions serving various functions, from conference call lines to encrypted ASCII messages, sometimes actual people on the other end of the line. I take no credit for the audio samples, and I explicitly claim no affiliation with the organization running it. All samples are used without permission, but with unspeakable gratitude and respect to the operators, particularly Robby."
