Devil in a Woodpile

Although Devil in a Woodpile are probably entertaining no matter where they play, it sounds like they'd be most ideal on someone's big farmhouse front porch at dusk, after a binge of BBQ and booze. Harmonica, mandolin, upright bass and tuba are the primary instruments, along with washboard, ukulele, clarinet and kick drum. Singer Rick Cookin' Sherry's harmonica playing is front and centre, and Gary Schepers's tuba gives a jug band feel to the proceedings. The band takes their traditional music seriously - their cover choices on their second album are by the likes of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and Sonny Boy Williamson - and the campy factor is downplayed in favour of a straightforward good time.
