The Devil Wears Prada

Space EP

It's hard for a metal band to capture the sound of a zombie apocalypse, as the Devil Wears Prada attempted to do with 2010's Zombie EP; to the average person, ANY metal vocalist sounds monstrous, while metalheads will simply find the vocals par for the course. On their second thematically titled EP, the Ohio adventurers are escaping the zombie-infested Earth and heading beyond its atmosphere. The Space EP has the dual benefits of having a theme that is easier to capture sonically and that fits in with current trends within the metalcore scene.

Predictably, the release is, well, spacey. Similar to how peers like Northlane, Periphery and their djent-spired ilk depend as much on the air between notes — the brief pause(s) that enable the coveted "groove" — as the notes themselves. The Ohio group haven't abandoned all traces of their older metalcore style, though their use of keyboards has changed: cheesy bombast is no longer the main focus here; instead, they aim to mimic the other notes in their sparse sound.

Space feels like the Devil Wears Prada's attempt at remaining relevant by returning to the EP format that's found success for them and moulding themselves to the current trends of the genre., and while it's fine for what it is, it still feels like an imitation, and no one wrote front page headlines for the second lunar landing.
