Devonté Hynes — a.k.a. Blood Orange — has shared a new improvised piano performance based on Julius Eastman's 1979 composition titled "Evil N****r."
Hynes performed the piece on Monday (July 27) night during a livestreamed Twitch event called Black Power Live Broadcast. The socially-distanced event included Hynes's performance streamed from Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles. A recording of his performance has since been uploaded to his streaming profiles.
The event was hosted by Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors and featured performances by Miguel, serpentwithfeet, Rico Nasty and more. Funds raised from the event benefitted a number of charities including Crenshaw Dairy Mart, Trap Heals, Transgender Law Center, Sankofa and Black Men Build.
