It's about quality, not quantity, for Berlin's David Koch. The Hans Eissler academic has only released a handful of EPs since 2007, but has remained a prominent figure for imprints like Vakant, Kalk Pets and his label, Meander Music. Despite these outlets, Koch has chosen young, exploratory label Haunt Music as the birthplace for his first full-length. This decision follows suit with Canadian Mike Shannon's, who also released his debut as Blue Fields on Haunt and has been a collaborative force with Koch since 2010. Wander is everything we've come to expect from DeWalta and more. His productions have always carried a warm, jazz-drenched, minimal aesthetic, but this time Koch explores these definitive characteristics to the fullest. Dank bass lines and slippery, wet synths act as the perfect companions to a first-class schooling in funk. In "Barksdale Movin On," Koch enlists MC Joga for a surprising throwback to classic early '90s hip-hop. The album packs plenty of fresh departures, providing much more than your typical house and techno record.
