Last year, dark pop auteur Dirty Beaches (aka Alex Zhang Hungtai) told Exclaim! that following "a bunch of split 7-inches with friends and stuff," he'd issue a pair of LPs simultaneously. While the haunted songsmith initially hinted the platters, titled Love Is the Devil and Drifters, would arrive in the fall of 2012, he's now confirmed they'll come out later this year.
"Just submitted 'love is the devil' to @zoomusic666 and the cover art as well," Hungtai tweeted, adding "A lot of blood & tears went into this instrumental LP."
Following a kind tweet from his label Zoo Music ("it rules"), the songwriter noted that the album is one of his "most honest works so far" and that the general vibe is "sad." His pals in Crocodiles then tweeted that the title track is "stunning," which led Hungtai to reveal that he tracked the apparently mellotron-assisted cut "crying in the studio alone in Berlin. 5am. One take."
Drifters, meanwhile, is still in the mixing stages. Due dates have yet to be announced for the LPs.
While the two records will serve as the follow-ups to 2011's Badlands, Dirty Beaches recent output includes a split LP with Slim Twig, U.S. Girls and Ela Orleans, a 7-inch as part of the Kingfisher Bluez singles series, and a score for the short film The Hippo, among others.
UPDATE: Drifters and Love Is the Devil will be released as a double LP on May 21.
