Dirty Projectors Release Surprise Seven-Inch As Free Download

It was a banner year for Dirty Projectors in 2009, as their album, Bitte Orca, earned a spot on many critics' year-end lists (including the fifth best pop rocks album here at Exclaim!). Now, Dave Longstreth and co. are looking to continue the momentum in 2010 by releasing a surprise seven-inch, including two unreleased songs from the Bitte Orca sessions: "Ascending Melody" and "Emblem of the World."

The physical version of the "Ascending Melody" seven-inch can be purchased from Domino. Those who don't wish to splurge, however, can opt to get the songs as a free digital download. Head over to Dirty Projectors' website where, in exchange for an email address, you'll receive free MP3s of the two tracks.

According to a MySpace message by the band: "These songs are from the Bitte Orca sessions. They are awesome but they just didn't fit with the vibe of the album, kinda like 'Soul to Squeeze' on Blood Sugar Sex Magik."

It's tough to see exactly what the band mean by that, however, since the jittery, R&B-infused "Ascending Melody" would have fit right in with Bitte Orca tracks like "Cannibal Resource" or "No Intention."

These songs were originally scheduled to be released back in the fall via the Temecula Sunrise EP. However, that EP never came out, and this is the first time the tracks have been made available.
