The leak of two tracks from Madvillain's upcoming album had us in a true frenzy last month, as it meant the duo of Madlib and DOOM might finally unleash their sophomore album at some point this year. There was a time when new DOOM material wasn't so hard to come by, however, as the rapper and producer was crazily prolific in the early to mid-2000s when he was still called MF Doom.
Take, for example, his Special Herbs series. The ten-volume set ran from 2001 to 2005 and collected all of the masked villain's production work. In 2006, the best selections were compiled on a triple CD set called Special Herbs: The Box Set, but now all ten full volumes will be issued in an expansive ten-LP box.
The set is being released by Nature Sounds Records and includes all ten volumes, many of which have never been released on vinyl, spread across ten twelve-inch records packaged in silver metallic jackets. In addition to the records, the set includes a DOOM poster, a download card with all the tracks plus ten extra DOOM beats, and a bonus seven-inch with two more tracks.
The whole set is available on February 1 for $85, but if you pre-order now, Nature Sounds will also throw in a copy of Pete Rock's NY's Finest Instrumentals on vinyl. It's basically a lifetime supply of dusty hip-hop beats.
