Mission Statement

Mere months after Dragon Fli Empire frontman Teekay showcased the Calgary rap scene with his compilation album, psYYChology, he's back with a new LP. On Mission Statement, production partner DJ Cosm and a list of others craft jazzy, throwback beats with a touch of soul over which Teekay can demonstrate his storytelling skills and knack for positive, upbeat lyrics. The big beat, fun flute loop and party raps of "Ain't Goin' Down" serves as a strong start to the album and sets the stage nicely for the mostly uptempo disc. The duo gathers a fantastic selection of guests for their fourth full-length; in addition to hook help from Yolanda Sargeant and Lady C, Teekay is joined by Birdapres to introduce their mission statement on the title track, joins up with Ghettosocks and Def 3 to flex their skills over the funky braggadocio posse cut "Gimme the Mic" and reports with rap legend Sadat X on "The Daily News Pt. 2." The guests don't steal the show though, as Teekay also shines solo on the soulful "Supreme," the nerdy "Superhero" and the downtempo "Train of Thought," with the first half focusing on Teekay's witty raps before becoming an instrumental track that closes out the album on a nice mellow vibe. Their formula remains pretty much the same, but after time off for other side projects, Dragon Fli Empire have returned with their most finely refined product yet.
