After reporting on Monday (March 1) that Gang Starr rapper Guru had fallen into a coma following a heart attack, we were pleased to announce two days later that, following successful surgery, the rapper was on the mend. Now, it seems as though the public - Guru's friends and family included - isn't getting the full story.
"I am doing fine and I am recovering!" Guru posted on his Twitter account following the surgery. "I'm weak, though. [Guru's producer] Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false!"
But if "Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false!" seemed just a little odd at the time, the situation appears to have worsened tenfold.
Earlier today (March 5), the DJ Premier Blog, a site run for Guru's longtime Gang Starr partner, posted a rather panicked entry titled "What in Gods Name is Really Going On With Guru??" in which the blog expressed its discomfort (and that of Talib Kweli and Busta Rhymes) with the way Solar has been using Guru's Twitter account. In the post, the blog points out that the whole situation was "really getting scary."
A cursory glance at Guru's Twitter page reveals that, well, the blog is right: Solar keeps posting all sorts of promotional material from the Twitter account, including releasing all Guru's albums for free, and keeps thanking fans for sending well-wishes and support to both Solar and Guru. On Wednesday (March 3), he posted "Solar Will Be Providing The Only Accurate Info On Guru And Will Be Doing Interviews Soon. Solar & Guru And Appreciate All The Love And Support."
Solar is also seemingly trying to force Guru and Premier apart. Earlier this week, he posted on his own Twitter that "Guru has made clear he does not want anything to do with certain people from his past, and for them too be making false statements about his health is unacceptable."
And as if all that wasn't creepy enough already, it seems Solar might even be lying through his account about Guru's health. In response to allegations that Solar may be barring Guru's family see him (see the emotional video below), he posted late last night (March 4) that "My Brother, sister and Niece visited me last week. My brother stayed with @Solar_7Grand for 3 days. Truth!!" Problem is Guru's nephew is calling bullshit on the whole thing, writing, "How does a person who has experienced the most severe alteration of consciousness know that his family is present and can speak on it???"
Evidently, all is not right in the Guru camp, but with Solar continuing to speak in the first person from Guru's own Twitter, it's pretty damn hard to tell what's really going.
