Droom

The Voice of Ghosts

Published Oct 1, 2006

On Droom’s MySpace page the band proclaim the death of indie because "the majors buy it.” Well, no one has to worry about buying into Droom’s brand of ’80s goth rock. Sounding like a cross between the Cure, New Order and bunch of other new wave groups, Droom fail on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to start. Their vocals, for one, need a lot of work. On "Into the River” lead singer Graham Jackson’s nasally pipes are grating and the weak harmonies only make matters worse. Their lack of originality is a tough one to swallow too. "Flesh Bone Body Soul” mimics any number of U2 tracks, and the rest sounds a little too much like the Cure. Sure, every band is ripping off something — especially the new crop of new wave bands — but that can be forgiven if the songs are half decent. If Droom existed in the ’80s they might have had a shot, but these days it’s not enough to just steal someone’s sound.
