Last year, the Drums scored a blogosphere hit with their beach-friendly self-titled debut album. Now, the '80s-loving pop outfit are gearing up for album No. 2, and they've let some of the details slip.
In an interview with DirrtyMusic.com [via NME], they revealed that the upcoming disc with be called Portamento. This confirms the title that was originally hinted at in a grainy studio clip posted online last month. The video, which also contains some extremely creepy synth backing, is embedded at the bottom of this page.
Of the title, frontman Jonathan Pierce said, "I can't see myself writing another song about the ocean or the beach. That's why we've called the new album Portamento -- it signifies going from one point to another."
He added that the creative process has been turbulent, especially since the departure of previous guitarist Adam Kessler. He admitted, "There were a lot of shouting matches. Two weeks ago, we came very close to splitting. But that has nourished the album, I think."
Pierce emphasized that the new album will be very different from its predecessor, explaining, "The first record was quite naïve, this one absolutely isn't. We couldn't make another record in the same way, but in the end, I regret nothing."
Then again, the band's recent benefit single for Japan sounded just as jangly and fun as the debut, so we'll have to wait and see.
