Ducktails

"Surfs Up"

Am I writing about this Ridgewood, NJ-based artist because the name recalls a certain Disney show I watched back in my youth? Of course! But Matthew Mondanile's work as Ducktails deserves credit for expanding far beyond the reaches of what Scrooge McDuck and his nephews could accomplish with their series of home tape experiments. So far Mondanile is living up to the prolific nature of the scene he's involved in, having released a fistful of seven-inches, cassettes and LPs through various means, not to mention his other projects like Predator Vision and Real Estate.

His new, already-sold-out seven-inch, Acres of Shade (released by Arbor), sees a slight shift away from the swirling, lo-fi, tropical soundscapes towards an amorphous sound balanced between ambient textures and the search for a gentle kinda noise.

Aside from the many, many releases he has planned for 2009, be sure to keep your eyes out for the new full-length set for release by Not Not Fun and this great live set from the studio of WFMU.
