I noticed this over at the always inspirational ill-formed blog last month, and I've finally found my chance to get to Dum Dum Girls. This one-gal band has been described as "blissed out buzzsaw," a description with a tinnitus-inducing ring to it that I just can't resist. Apparently just one girl (an L.A.-based librarian named Dee Dee), Dum Dum Girls is in the spirit of hissy, scratchy, reverb-heavy, solo basement recordings, á la Nathan Williams' WAVVES. With an obvious wink to '60s girl group pop and JAMC's ear-bleeding feedback, Dee Dee's songs reach a fine balance between sublime melodies and dissonance, much like past favourites Black Tambourine and Shop Assistants.
Unfortunately, her best song, "Jail La La," a prison-themed, sure-fire single-of-the-year contender for bloggers, is only streaming over at her MySpace, but RCRD LBL has upped a couple of tracks to stream, download and love: the tragic love story of "Catholicked" and rave up "Yours Alone."
Expect an album out soon via HoZac.
