Dum Dum Girls were among the wave of fuzz-obsessed lo-fi acts to emerge from the indie-pop underground a few years ago, but songwriter Dee Dee and her collaborators have since cleaned up their sound — somewhat — and are amassing an impressive discography. The latest instalment is Too True, which will be out on January 28 through Sub Pop. In the meantime, it's available to stream in Canada on Exclaim.ca.
In a statement, Dee Dee explained that the bulk of the tracks were written in a week-long whirlwind of a writing session in her New York apartment, while "two more songs were born from drunken loneliness in room at the Chateau Marmont" in Hollywood.
The tunes were recorded at L.A.'s East West Studios with returning producers Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, the Go-Go's) and Sune Rose Wagner (of the Raveonettes), with Dee Dee polishing up the singing at her bedroom.
The results aren't a huge departure from the Dum Dum Girls sound. Once again, the drums are peppy, the guitars soaked in fuzz and the vocals filled with gothic drama. This time, though, the hooks are especially prominent, with anthems like "Lost Boys and Girls Club" and "In the Wake of You" standing out as some of Dee Dee's catchiest melodies yet.
