British new wave vets Duran Duran have been going strong for more than 30 years, and their legacy will be celebrated early next year with a tribute album. Making Patterns Rhyme: A Tribute to Duran Duran is due out on February 25 through Manimal Group.
Notable contributors includeGrimes, Liars, Moby, Warpaint, Juliette Lewis, Little Dragon and more. There's also some up-and-coming Canadian talent, since Louise Burns, the Holiday Crowd and Beliefs are involved. More artists will be added to the album, with details to be announced in January.
UPDATE: According to Pitchfork, Grimes will not be on the album.
Some of the cover tunes have already been confirmed, so peruse a partial list of songs below. The artists were asked to eschew Duran Duran's mega-hits in favour of deep cuts, so don't expect "Hungry Like the Wolf" to pop up here. All proceeds from the album go to Amnesty International.
Manimal founder Paul Beahan said in a statement, "Duran Duran started out as a gang of art-school kids who were in the thick of the UK post-punk scene. The only difference between Duran Duran and bands like the Cure or Wire is that Duran saw the artistic edge in disco as well as early British punk and art-rock and created a blend of their own mainstream-friendly choruses, dance beats and rhythms. Simon [Le Bon]'s lyrics in my opinion are right up there with such revered artists as Gang of Four, the Fall and the Clash. Their incredible music was much overshadowed by massive early stardom. Duran to me will always be the post-punk band that introduced Americans to British new wave and made it a mainstream brand of music in the 1980s."
The album will be released digitally, and Manimal will also release some limited split 7-inches in Europe in February.
Making Patterns Rhyme: A Tribute to Duran Duran (partial tracklist):
