Eagles Of Death Metal

Death By Sexy

After confusing many with their deceptive name, Eagles of Death Metal rose to a level of notoriety that quickly extinguished the other overwhelming curiosity about them — that they are Josh Homme’s other band. Now a full-fledged functioning band operating in Queens of the Stone Age’s downtime, EODM are in reality a hedonistic power trio with a gift for hooky riffage and the ability to attract a ton of famous, musically talented bodies, as the guest list (which includes Dave Grohl, Jack Black, Brody Dalle and Mark Lanegan) on this sophomore record resembles the typical hip-hop LP. Outdoing the flamboyance of their 2004 debut Peace Love Death Metal, if Death By Sexy were a partygoer, he’d be the pompadour-sporting macho dude who’d drink a case of Schlitz, puke all over his snakeskin boots and still get the hottest girl in the room to go home with him. Led by the swaggering vocals of Jesse "Boots Electric” Hughes — which fall in and out an Elvis croon, a Jagger holler and a more exaggerated falsetto than his drumming band-mate exploits in QOTSA — there’s not a lot here to convince you this isn’t a pastiche. But considering all these guys want to do is party hard and get it on, what else would you expect them to sound like? Generating riffs that would make both ZZ Top and Marc Bolan curse aloud out of jealousy, Death By Sexy is pure unadulterated boogie rock that should earn these guys more tail than Zeppelin and Kiss combined.
