Coming off the fall launch of Eamon McGrath's serialized Exile project, the Toronto singer-songwriter has announced that part two is set to arrive digitally March 11 through Aporia Records.
A press release explains that while the first instalment was inspired by '80s-era indie rock, this second set "finds its roots in the early 90s grunge movement." The three-song outing's opener "Canadian Shield" is said to be an overdriven road song about the trip from Toronto to Winnipeg, while "Paper Boats" is described as a "brooding and psychedelic" track inspired by Nirvana, Black Sabbath and Crazy Horse.
Despite the apparently amp-cranked inspiration of the EP as a whole, the preview McGrath has let loose is an acoustic guitar-assisted cut called "Running From the Cops," which he has apparently been trying to perfect for a few years.
"It's an age-old song about being haunted by memories, and about that uneasy feeling when they start to creep back into the present time after you've thought that you'd let go of them," McGrath explained in a statement. "I'd been waiting for years to get what I thought would be a golden take, and then finally it happened, a weekend after coming back from a European tour and tracking what I'd imagined was going to be demos, and it all just kind of finally came together." As previously reported, the bulk of the Exile sessions were recorded live-off-the-floor sessions with Rob Higgins at his Phoebe St. Studios in Toronto, with McGrath joined in the studio by July Talk guitarist Peter Dreimanis and drummer Danny Miles, as well as bassist Clay Jones (Styrofoam Ones, Beneath Augusta). The third, as-yet undetailed instalment has yet to receive a due date, but the sessions will be compiled for a full album release later this summer.
