East Toronto is getting a new music venue — but first, it's looking to raise money through a GoFundMe campaign.
The venue will be called Mercy on Gerard, and it's located at 1035 Gerrard Street East. That's the former location of the Grand Gerrard Theatre, a now-defunct venue that's been closed for a few years. Mercy on Gerrard is aiming for a spring 2025 opening.
The fundraiser notes that organizer Kinkade Davis has already leased the building and is hoping to raise $31,035. That number includes $7,000 for renovations, $13,900 for a sound system, $6,800 for lighting, and $3,335 for a new sign.
"This building has been a beloved third space for over a century, and I want to continue that legacy," Davis wrote on GoFundMe. Mercy on Gerard will be a DIY space for "live music, entertainment, and artistic adventures in the East End."
As of this writing, the campaign has raised $1,625. View the GoFundMe page here.
The venue has created a wishlist of needed items, ranging from office supplies to audio equipment. People who want to get involved can also donate labour.
