Travel back three years and the future was looking pretty grim for UK songwriter Edwyn Collins. In 2005, the man had suffered two cerebral hemorrhages, wasn't expected to survive and music was likely the last thing on his mind. Fast-forward to today and Collins is back on stage, has released his sixth solo record, Home Again, and even roped in the likes of Irvine Welsh, Jarvis Cocker, David Shrigley and Franz Ferdinand, among others, to emblazon one of his singles with colorful little birds. Adding to recent list of accomplishments, Collins is launching his own art exhibition next month in London.
The exhibit will showcase pictures he drew while recovering from his near-fatal hemorrhages, which left him partly paralysed. Every day during his rehabilitation Collins drew a bird and then titled and dated it as a way of mapping his recovery. The drawings were inspired by the book The History of British Birds, which hes owned since the days when he fronted iconic post-punk outfit Orange Juice. In fact, before Orange juice, Collins had trained to be a draughtsman and his father was an art lecturer.
The shows premier will be held on October 21 at Londons Smithfield Gallery, where it will run until November 1.
