Eleanor Friedberger Shares Two Destroyer Covers from Unfinished EP

BY Matt BobkinPublished Apr 11, 2020

Eleanor Friedberger opened for Destroyer on his recent tour, which was cut short when the world shut down. Now, the former Fiery Furnaces member has revealed details of a scrapped EP of Destroyer covers for the tour and shared demos for two tracks.

On her Bandcamp yesterday (April 10), Friedberger shared demos for covers of "Hell" and "The River," a pair of songs from Destroyer's 2015 album, Poison Season. The sparse guitars and MIDI backdrop make the demos sound like outtakes from Destroyer's 2004 album, Your Blues.

Alongside the songs, Friedberger shared a statement about the scrapped EP:

I thought I'd put out a digital EP of Destroyer covers before the tour started in February. I didn't. There were too many favorites from Poison Season and it seemed like it would be an unfair, and slightly creepy amount of attention to that one album! But I did make some demos, and I'll throw them up on Bandcamp now; the link is in the bio. First are "Hell" and "The River". It was such a thrill to sing these songs with the band, and Dan was so generous to let me hog the stage. I wish we could be in the dressing room, drinking again, tonight.

Listen to the demos below.

Friedberger's latest studio album was 2018's Rebound. Destroyer released Have We Met earlier this year, which was named one of Exclaim!'s Must-Hear Albums from Winter 2020.
