Emma Pollock

"Adrenaline"

BY Cam LindsayPublished May 25, 2007

When you think of the word "adrenaline," you're likely not associating it with the Delgados. As fine a band as they come, the influential Scottish indie band, at least in their later years, appeared far from "adrenalised." But here comes the band's former guitarist and vocalist Emma Pollock with more zip on her solo debut than practically all of the Delgados' aughties material. "Adrenaline" (taken from her new self-titled EP on 4AD) isn't exactly "Sucrose" or even "Monica Webster," mind you, but the pace at which she pushes her piano-driven pop gives her tender vocal tone a lovely quality (and check out those lush Liz Fraser-like background vocals!). And then she turns up the overdrive on guitars for the chorus - a move her fans are all too familiar with - which only drives home the excitement that should await her forthcoming LP.
