Event Horizon

Event Horizon’s first label release is not one-dimensional. That is one of the strengths of Naked on the Black Floor but also its greatest defect. The album has the loose and lo-fi feel of a jam session recording, which makes its intricacy and experimentation sound like amateurish noodling at times, despite the presence of some truly interesting material, particularly in the electronic textures. The record’s disembodied and poorly synced vocal doubling also compromises the polished sheen more characteristic of prog metal, sounding like two people yelling melodies at each other from opposite sides of a room. While all this lends Naked on the Black Floor a sense of immediacy, it is more alienating than endearing — a shame and a waste of potential.
