Evergrey

Some Evergrey fans might be thrilled by the band’s announcement that Torn is a return to form after their last slightly off-kilter album, Monday Morning Apocalypse. I am not one of those fans. Torn is solid, heavy and straightforward, with the odd accent, like briefly prominent keys and female vocals, to diversify the thick, metallic texture. It’s also a little too predictable and nearly boring, at times. Part melody and part groove, still emotional but with less range, this latest record just doesn’t stand out from the rest of Evergrey’s discography. Its strongest moments are brief interludes and transitions that rarely last long enough to really sink your ears into. But Torn is still Evergrey and the songs demonstrate the band’s proficient skill, if not their artistry and flexibility.
