Ex-Supergrass Leader Gaz Coombes Announces Sophomore Solo Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 17, 2014

Former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes has announced the next step in his solo career, with the English artist's sophomore LP, Matador, due early next year.

Coombes confirmed over Facebook today (November 17) that the album lands in the UK January 26 through Caroline/Hot Fruit Recordings.  North American release date has not yet been given, but the artist's 2012 solo debut Gaz Coombes Presents... Here Come the Bombs had been issued in Canada via Dine Alone Records.

A press release notes that Coombes self-produced the set, with recording sessions taking place at his home studio and at Oxfordshire's Courtyard Studio. The bulk of the music was performed by the solo artist, though the set features additional drumming from Loz Colbert, synth work on opener "Buffalo" from Charly Coombes, and backing vocals throughout the LP from Beverlei Brown and Faith Simpson.

Matador is said to find Coombes pushing his musical boundaries, with the album taking inspiration from krautrock combo Neu!, Swedish unit Goat, Disney musicals and Brian Eno. You'll find Matador's tracklisting and a quick trailer for the set below. That's the cover above.

As previously reported today, members of Supergrass, who called it quits in 2010, will be featured on the soundtrack to the new Paul Thomas Anderson film Inherent Vice. For the soundtrack, members of the band joined forces with Jonny Greenwood to rework the Radiohead live staple "Spooks," though it unclear if that actually includes Coombes. The Inherent Vice soundtrack arrives December 15 via Nonesuch.
