Excepter

Much like Liars, Excepter use wild imaginations and experimental methodology within a rock stance, though with more fluidity and range than most bands holed up in the noise rock chasm. The Brooklyn sextet are also quite the moonlighters, jumping from various labels to fulfil their musical promiscuity, and landing in the lap of Paw Tracks feels like a perfect fit. Debt Dept. is their first conventional full-length since 2006’s Alternation and without getting too premature on 2008, is one of the year’s more inventive records. Teetering on a grey line that falls between improv and premeditation, Excepter weave any number of practices, instruments and mistakes into their unprejudiced mix to forge one big beautiful mess of trial dub rhythms, stream of consciousness vocalising, spinning drone and videogame tomfoolery. The biggest surprise is how long these songs stay with you. "Walking Through The Night” has a sinister low buzz that embeds itself into your memory, while the murderous, pulsating chant of "Kill People” sets it up to be an unlikely hit — and possible alibi for the homicidal maniac who takes it too seriously. Ugly, bizarre and strangely accessible, Debt Dept. is set to collect. Don’t waste your energy resisting.
