Resavoir's "Inside Minds" Is a Soundtrack for Shortening Days

Exclaim! Staff Picks

Even if you aren't immediately familiar with Resavoir by name, there's a good chance you've heard the sounds of its leader, Will Miller, sometime before. The Chicago-based musician, composer and producer plays trumpet as a member of Whitney, and lent keyboards to SZA's "Blind" as part of that song's production collective. Most generously, you might recall Miller and Resavoir's appearance in a prior Staff Pick of mine from earlier this year.

What you need to know more than those details is how "Inside Minds" previews a sophomore Resavoir album to be announced this fall. Until that time, the instrumental is a sublime interlude with which to settle into the days becoming shorter, its curious chord progression like dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy when first plucked out by guitarist Matt Gold. It sets the stage for Gold and Miller's piano to trade off traipses around the chording with respective, equally inquisitive leads, overcoming any restlessness in its serene coda.
