Exclusive: Julie Doiron Sets Sights on Collaborative Album with Chad VanGaalen

Besides her storied solo career, New Brunswick-based singer-songwriter Julie Doiron has proven herself a valuable collaborator. The obvious proof is in her work as bassist for seminal Canadian indie rock institution Eric's Trip, but more recently, Doiron has lent her talents to Mount Eerie's Lost Wisdom and a collaborative album with Fred Squire and Attack in Black's Daniel Romano as Daniel, Fred and Julie.

Now, on the phone with Exclaim!, Doiron recently revealed that she's been in talks for another collaboration, this time with Calgary's most experimental/beloved singer-songwriter, Chad VanGaalen.

"We've talked about it," Doiron says. "We started talking about it last year, and at one point, we decided that we're both really interested, but we're both really busy."

Although their busy schedules will be dominating their lives in the short term, Doiron said that she won't rule out the possibility of a collaboration. "It may not happen this year or next year, but it will happen in the next five years," she says. "It's definitely not an impossibility, but right now I'm really busy on the road. It's going to happen, I think."

Hopefully, Doiron can find some time to catch up with VanGaalen when she plays in Calgary tonight (January 21).
