A minute or so of sinister samples and a short melodic intro trigger the ear—brain neural connections, warming up your sensory apparatus just in time for the static-y crash of a brutal sonic waveform. That's how Monotoneotony by Toronto, ON's Eyeswithoutaface clicks into on mode. The first couple of songs lay heavy on the mechanical and growl-y side of things, rolling ahead like a dirty electric storm. "Ripples in the Blotter" adds more groove and melody to the mix, and from there on in the trash-tech matrix continues on a highly variable trajectory ― speed and textures an almost unstable grid, but not quite. There's plenty of material for '90s nostalgia here in the potent and slightly eccentric fusion of metal and machine, alternative and industrial. That said, Monotoneotony doesn't regurgitate old ideas but ferociously channels them into something with more contemporary relevance.
