COMIC

BY James KeastPublished Oct 1, 2006

It’s been over a decade since director David Fincher dropped his sintastic Se7en; now Zenescope Comics is launching a seven-part limited series focusing on each sin. Like the film, Gluttony opens wide first; instead of simply relating film events in graphic form, this series tells a kind of origin story — not of John Doe, the killer authored by Kevin Spacey, but of the victims. Through some lovely, impressionistic art, we see the guilt-ridden, tragic life of the fat man tortured by the little-seen Doe in vivid detail. Raven Gregory (writer), Tommy Castillo (pencils) and Mark McNabb (inks) are freakish for details, down to freeze-framing moments in the film in order to recreate Doe’s intricate diaries. Gluttony holds fewer surprises because it’s well documented in the film; I can’t wait for the film’s under-explored sins: pride, lust and sloth.
