Endless Summer

BY I. KhiderPublished Aug 1, 2001

Endless Summer is the electronic album of the year, created by easily the most tuneful artist on the Mego label. Fennesz is known for taking pop-rock tunes from megastars like the Beach Boys and recreating something entirely original from the source material. This music is not about remixing, rather it's about using pre-recorded songs as instruments in themselves. Fennesz processes and manipulates the source material by taking the pulse of the pop tune and rebuilding something deeply sentimental and sweet. The music on Endless Summer swings between post-rock guitar plucking and abstract yet accessible sounds. In fact, the title track is the perfect marriage of rock and electronic, achieving balance and harmony between the two. Fennesz's very method of source manipulation is fresh and leaves room for development, inspiring anticipation for future albums. Also captivating is the liner art by Tina Frank, whose manipulation of summer fun photos and use of colour schemes aptly fit the music and mood of the album. This is an instance where everything turned out right to form a first rate production.
