Fennesz

Venice

BY Cheryl ThompsonPublished Aug 1, 2004

Venice, recorded on location the summer of 2003, is the fourth studio album from Christian Fennesz. What does one say about an album like this? There are no lyrics, no rhythmic arrangements, no funky bass lines. This recording is filled with trance-like tones and subtle chord variations. Venice should be taken as one artist's attempt to musically capture the essence of Venice, Italy. Having never been there it's difficult to postulate its accurateness. You don't want to be too narrow-minded and chalk this recording down to just an assortment of notes, but it would be giving a fair word to a dismally hard-to-grasp album. Probably a great backdrop to a theatrical scene in a film, it will be an arduous task to recapture that kind of dramatic conviction in one's living room.
