The Flaming Lips have been planning a set of John Lennon-penned Beatles covers for their New Year's Eve gig at Aspen, CO's Belly Up, and they've given fans a taste of what to expect by sharing their version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
The psychedlic song is a perfect fit for the Flaming Lips' quirky style. They remain faithful to the trippy spirit of the original while making it more expansive, stretching it to six minutes in length with some longer instrumental sections and an awesomely dramatic interpretation of the chorus.
Other songs that the Flaming Lips have been practising for the Lennon-centric set include "Tomorrow Never Knows," "Come Together," "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey," "Across the Universe," "Dear Prudence" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Scroll past the full version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" to see a rehearsal video of the band practicing for the big night.
