A series of previously unheard a cappella vocal stems from the late Elliott Smith have been unearthed by former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty, who has now shared them via a trio of electronic tracks produced under his UUL pseudonym.
According to UUL's SoundCloud page, Doughty tracked Smith's vocals back in 1998 at Los Angeles's Sunset Sound Factory, apparently while working on Good Will Hunting, with the recordings made "specifically to sample and slice-and-dice over beats."
Doughty noted that the tapes had been sitting unused for years, only being rediscovered last November. The musician then took the a cappella singing and built beats around them, noting that the delayed completion of the collaborations are "exactly what he and I intended to make!"
Down below, you can sample the glitchy beats of "The Record," which also has a chopped-and-manipulated Smith singing lines that would eventually pop up on his XO track "Bottle Up and Explode." The minimalist house pound and conga rhythms of "Dogs" features some studio chatter and Smith weighing in on an annoying pooch ("I don't wanna live here with your fucking dog"). "Burn (Aah Fuck)" also features some light piano work from Smith and some studio bloopers, all of which being looped and tweaked atop another dance beat by Doughty.
You can stream all three tracks down below.
