A great nu-disco record usually has a few commonalities — infectious grooves, thoughtful arrangements — but Fouk's With Lasers, which comes by way of Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings, easily blows past this standard. That's clear immediately when cascading arp-synth lines creep in on the cosmic "F3000." Any doubts stay stuck in the rear-view mirror during "With Lasers" and "See You on the Other Side," sturdy bits of disco business.
Sometimes, if a guest remix is a record's pinnacle, it's a sign of its weakness, but that's not the case with Mount Liberation Unlimited's deep, Motor City-style reimagining of "See You on the Other Side"; it's just so good it tops even their "Crying Cowboy Dubb," which somehow manages to work in reverberated slide guitar without sounding hokey — a feat in itself. Credit goes to all involved here, though; With Lasers is an impressive record.
