Four Tet

Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) has, over the course of his career, veered more and more in the direction of dance music and away from his earlier, headphone-ready solo albums and his work in the band Fridge, where he started out. For his MUTEK set, it was clear he was not to be outdone in getting the crowd moving. Hebden cherry-picked some of his most danceable tracks, techno-ing it up a touch more for the occasion. His complex, layered sound was at times not getting through the speakers fully intact, some of the subtlety getting a little lost under the bass, but the audience loved it all the same. Several of the tracks were suitably sped up in tempo for the dance floor, and at one point, Hedben had fun with the crowd by taking the beat far too fast to dance to, leading to a ridiculous speed that inevitably collapsed in a sea of flailing limbs. It all became a highly enjoyable, full-on set, with one of the highlights being the brief encore of "Angel Echoes" from last year's There Is Love in You album.
