Canada's Daniel Gardner (aka Frivolous) couldn't have been placed in a better time slot. The esteemed house music aficionado was scheduled to open MUTEK's second NOCTURNE and wasted no time jumping into his festive brand of dance. It wasn't long before a seemingly empty dance floor was filled with cheerful festival-goers, as Gardner lured them forward in snake-charming fashion. Live bongos and washed out vocals permeated the brilliantly tuned system, while Gardner danced along in a modest polo and shorts. An impressive number of rhythmic elements were comfortably supported by a warm dose of funk. The interactive performance leaned on the Canadian's improvisational prose, as Gardner was often glued to his keys, dabbling in carnival-inspired themes, working to extend his tracks. Slight hiccups in the performance were met with cheeky grins and playful gestures, as it was clear nothing was about to break his groove. Frivolous made the sun shine in a dimly lit Metropolis.
