"Bebey" (DJ/Rupture & Matt Shadetek remix)

BY David DacksPublished Sep 23, 2009

Perhaps overshadowed by Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors as Willliamsburg's most popular and critically acclaimed artists of the last year or so, the quirky, fierce and utterly danceable charms of Gang Gang Gang Dance's last album Saint Dymphna should not be forgotten.

To that end comes a blazing new remix from the Dutty Artz crew of Matt Shadetek and DJ/Rupture, whose work has just enlivened Jahdan Blakkamoore's new release Buzzrock Warrior.

"Bebey" was the opening track of Saint Dymphna, and seemed more like an introduction to the range of the disc than a standalone track - what an introduction, though. Synthetic, electric and acoustic noises battle it out with Lizzie Bougatsos' exhortations across the stereo spectrum to reach a crescendo of Africanized arpeggiation.

Rupture and Shadetek speed up the tempo, insert a more discernable, subtly skanking beat and reshuffle the eclectic elements of the track to create a mix which won't induce peak-hour dancing but should go down just right in the wee hours when things get a little bit dubbier. It's a taste of what's to come from the duo's Solar Life Raft mix on November 10.
