Guru, the leading force behind pioneering hip-hop outfit Gang Starr and the Jazzmatazz project, is reportedly in a coma after suffering a heart attack Sunday (February 28). The 43-year-old rapper is set to undergo surgery today (March 1).
Guru's Gang Starr partner DJ Premier confirmed the MC's condition in a call to satellite radio program Hip Hop Nation, the Guardian reports.
Since the 2003 album The Ownerz, Gang Starr have kept a relatively low profile, going on an indefinite hiatus and only recently hinting of new material.
Guru (born Keith Elam) released his last solo album, Lost and Found, in 2009, which followed up 2007's The Hip-Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future, from his jazz/hip-hop project Jazzmatazz.
