In a culture where a reality television star was elected leader of the free world, celebrities have now been emboldened like never before when it comes to sharing their political opinions. KISS frontman/patent troll extraordinaire Gene Simmons is the latest to enter the exhausting fray, preaching that Canadians and Americans should "agree to disagree" on our politics.
In a column penned for the Toronto Sun, Simmons asks whether or not "it's past time we all start looking at each other the same way the bad guys in the Middle East look at us," saying that "they make no distinction between left or right, between conservative or liberal. They hate us all. Because we are Canadian. Or, because we are American."
Simmons then goes on to proclaim that the hatred of Western society stems from the two nations valuing "a free society where we can think and do as we please. Where women are highly regarded and respected. Where freedom of choice isn't dictated by religion, or skin colour, or ethnicity. Where you can achieve your dreams and aspirations."
He then doubles down on his utopic view of the West by urging readers to "stop arguing with each other about politics. You have the right to voice your opinion, of course. But Canada and America also belong to people who don't necessarily agree with you. Agree to disagree."
"Sign up now to be a member of the only political party that matters: The Canadian party," he writes, before telling readers to "go and have a cup of coffee at Timmy's and celebrate/respect each other's differences."
Unfortunately for those who aren't human brands, these issues stand to be much more complex than Simmons makes them seem. You can read the full column here.
