As Lawnya Vawnya closed things out with one last show, they had an ace up their sleeves with local band George Nervous Four, a hard-edged, mighty post-punk band with a gonzo sound that bowls you over with each new song. They've got some of the hallmarks of technically gifted math rockers — instrumental flourishes and time signature tricks — but it's a more euphoric and loose sound. In some cases they channelled Daydream era Sonic Youth, in others they met John Reis halfway between Rocket From the Crypt and Drive Like Jehu. It was definitely a furious kind of young-man-rock, the band doing little to avert their eyes from their fast flying fingers or anything that might break their concentration from kicking out the motherfucking jams. St. John's is the rock, and they have some bands who seriously bring it. George Nervous Four were a revelation.
