Just as Gwar changed the heavy metal concert experience 30 years ago with their theatrical, blood- and goo-spewing shows, the band are now ready to remodel how you munch a burger with their next project, the GWARbar.
The group are currently running an Indiegogo crowd-funding project to raise cash towards creating their own food and drink destination in their native Richmond, VA. Gwar have teamed up with restauranteur Travis Croxton to deliver "gourmet junk food" in the city's Jackson Ward district.
A press release for the project notes that Chef BalSac the Jaws 'o Death (a.k.a. band guitarist Michael Derks) will be using his years of experience in the restaurant industry to build a signature menu and cocktail program. A commercial for the project adds that the metal-mouthed foodie will "reign over a fantasy land of food and beverage," and that the venue will serve a signature beer, GWAR-B-Q sauce and a whole lot of meat.
Gwar are seeking $50,000 to update the interior and exterior of the building they've secured, with renovations including the building of a smokehouse. The band added, "We need a Gwar sized meat grinder to make creative new takes on hot dogs and freshly ground hamburgers."
So far, the band have raised roughly $6,300 of their goal as of press time. You can read up on incentives, from a spot at the bar to having a drink named after you (for the sum of $2,500) over here. The crowd-funding campaign ends June 21.
As previously reported, Gwar suffered a major blow earlier this year when vocalist Dave Brockie (a.k.a. Oderus Urungus) was found dead in his Richmond home. He was 50 years old.
The group have plans to erect a statue in his honour, and will hold their annual GWAR-B-Q at Hadad's Lake in Richmond on August 16.
