Haircuts

Sorrow is the Way to Love

BY Kevin HaineyPublished Aug 1, 2006

The Haircuts are a twee-as-fuck cross-continental duo that specialise in crafting tender indie pop songs and sending them straight from their hearts to yours. Though the two have never met in person, the Haircuts is a lovely and intimate project of jangle and fuzz led by London, ON-based songwriter/cartoonist Teresa Daniele and filled out by Richmond, California’s Ryan Marquez (ex-Soda Jerk and Apple Orchard). Most of the songs on this all-too-brief debut are concerned with the finer and sweeter things in life — love, holding hands, and generally being cute — but there are also some very sad themes at play here, like loneliness and isolation and feeling to be at the end of one’s rope. But no matter, the Haircuts are sure to bring you up rather than bring you down as Daniele’s snappy drums, fuzzy guitar and delicate voice bop along with enthusiasm and hooks to spare (she also records solo as Junebug). Much like their EP from a few years ago, It’s Always Better When We’re Together, Sorrow is the Way to Love is jam-packed with feeling and hooks that will take hold of your heart and threaten to never let go. No wonder the Swedish indie pop kids are just loving this stuff…
