Halloween, Alaska take the cake for an odd, location-based band name. "Odd" is a pretty good way to go about describing the Minneapolis, MN group and their fourth studio album. Every song on All Night the Calls Came In is quite lengthy, full of striped patterns of going one way then the next. "Dance by Accident" feels like it's intended to trip you up, with the guitar's call-back, groovy licks, while "Dead Air" makes waves from stillness. But it's the lyrics that are most intriguing, such as on the aforementioned "Dance by Accident," where vocalist James Diers calmly sings, "I followed the music person down the line; I followed the magazine past the mountain range. I follow a wolf named spirit guide." Halloween, Alaska's album is sleepy and sedated, but confident, and that should speak to their fans quite loudly.
