This past Saturday (September 12) marked what would have been Neil Peart's 68th birthday, and Fu Manchu have now paid tribute to the late Rush drummer and primary lyricist by covering one of the Canadian power trio's early hits.
The California outfit have applied their stoner rock sound to Rush's "Working Man," and while it is a tune from the band's catalogue that Peart had no hand in creating, Fu Manchu's swaggering rendition is still something to behold. You can take a listen below.
In sharing their "Working Man" cover, Fu Manchu write that they recorded the track in January of this year, and that all sales proceeds will be donated to brain tumor research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Peart's memory. They add that the cover "is a digital release only...for now."
"Members of our band and our manager were in the audience on August 1, 2015 when this was the final song played by Neil, Geddy and Alex," Fu Manchu write, reflecting on the Los Angeles Forum show that would eventually stand as Rush's final concert.
For their 2018 album Clone of the Universe, Fu Manchu got Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson to lend some licks to 18-minute closing track "Il Mostro Atomico." Peart was also paid tribute by a host of his drumming contemporaries over the weekend at the 2020 Modern Drummer Festival.
Peart passed away in January at age 67, following a battle with brain cancer. A tribute in the drummer's hometown of St. Catharines was recently rescheduled for 2021.
