Hear the Week's Best New Canadian Music: Halluci Nation, Breeze, LOONY

BY Exclaim! StaffPublished Jul 2, 2021

It's a new month, which means you're probably due to update what you have in rotation. (Or you can just keep listening to the same 20 songs from that 2008 iPod Nano playlist; we're not here to judge).

We are, however, here to bolster Indigenous excellence from the Halluci Nation (formerly A Tribe Called Red), Xhalida, Carsen Gray and Cody Coyote.

You can keep the community spirit going with a slew of new collaborations. As previously reported, Canadian hero Daniel Lanois has a posthumous release with the legendary Leonard Cohen called "Torn Again" out now, while Vancouver's Boslen has teamed up with Charmaine. Meanwhile, Toronto's Breeze tapped Cadence Weapon, and a l l i e is back with Birthday Boy & Leland Whitty.

It's been a light week, but highlights from new album releases are here via GTA favourites Possum and LOONY. On that note, the week also comes with a brand new cover story from us. Just throwing that out there for your weekend reading list.

Likewise, we have some covers for you here: Winnipeg's Joey Landreth does a tender rendition of Jeff Buckley's evergreen "Lover, You Should've Come Over," while Montreal's the Wildwood Family take on Sophie Grégoire Trudeau's self-penned ode to her daughter — which the two once performed a cappella at a 2016 Martin Luther King Day event — "Smile Back at Me." What a niche, Canadian family affair — Mary J. Blige would probably be inspired to remix her 2001 hit after hearing this.

Start the month off fresh with The Eh! List below, presented by Mary Brown's Chicken & Taters — all Canadian and proud of it!
