Let's give Hot Hot Heat credit for being ahead of the curve. On 2002's Make Up the Breakdown, the Vancouver natives were playing '80s-indebted post-punk and pilfering from the Cure a full two years before Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party made such stylings commonplace. We haven't heard much from the group as of late, however, as they parted ways with Sire Records after releasing Happiness Ltd. in 2007.
Well, the band have finally found a new home, and on June 1 will release Future Breeds via Dine Alone.
As well as the band's first album on Dine Alone, Future Breeds is the first to feature new bassist Parker Bossley, formely of Fake Shark-Real Zombie!, Bays handled the recordings himself at the band's new Tugboat Place studio in Vancouver. Mixing was done by Ryan Dahle (Limblifter, Age of Electric).
You can preview the tracks "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD" over at Hot Hot Heat's MySpace and check out the accompanying videos at HotHotHeat.com. If these songs are indicative of what the rest of the album sounds like, you can see why perhaps Bays was looking for a less radio-oriented label: both tracks feature complex structures and nothing even approaching a catchy hook.
As Bays blogged back in November, "I wanted to record WAY more often, have it sound WAY weirder, and make the demos - the INITIAL ideas - BE the record!"
And while that June release date may feel a long way off, Hot Hot Heat do have some tour dates happening right now in Ontario, and we're guessing they'll be previewing at least some of the new material.
Tour dates:
3/9 Peterborough, ON - Red Dog
3/10 Kingston, ON - Ale House
3/11 St. Catharines, ON - L3 Nightclub
3/12 Toronto, ON - Horseshoe Tavern (CMW)
3/13 London, ON - Call the Office
