Detroit hip-hop producer J Dilla's most celebrated work, Donuts, came out just three days before his tragic death in 2006. Now, following a string of posthumous releases, that iconic album will be reissued as a box set of 7-inch singles. It will be released through Stones Throw Records with a projected shipping date of January 7.
The album has been spread out over seven 7-inch singles. The box also includes a bonus eighth 7-inch containing the fan club single "Signs" backed with DOOM & Ghostface Killah's "Sniper Elite & Murder Goons" (which features a Dilla beat).
Hearing Donuts spread out across so many 7-inches is bound to be a disorienting experience, given that it includes more than 30 tracks, many of which are bite-sized instrumental snippets that flow directly into the next track. Below, listen to a version of "The Diff'rence" that comes attached to "Donuts (Outro)." Stones Throw notes that this comes from the album's original track sequence.
