Jack Lowden Cast as Morrissey in Upcoming 'Steven' Biopic

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 18, 2016

Back in 2014, we learned that a Morrissey biopic titled Steven was in the works under the guidance of director Mark Gill. Still moving ahead, the project has now unveiled who will be stepping in to the spotlight to portray the young title character.

Jack Lowden will play the role of Steven Patrick Morrissey in the new film, which examines the early singer's early life in Manchester, prior to becoming the iconic frontman of the Smiths and establishing a long-running solo career. Lowden's previous credits include a slew of UK theatre roles, as well as most recently appearing on the screen in the 2016 BBC miniseries War and Peace.

In addition to directing the film, Gill co-wrote the movie's script with William Thacker. The two previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated short The Voorman Problem.

Producer Orion Williams explained [via Deadline] that the script "looks inside the young mind of Steven Patrick Morrissey and captures a glimpse of what he observed and channelled in order to give us the future music of his thoughts, not only with The Smiths but his solo work as well."

No release date has been set yet, but filming is expected to begin in April.

Morrissey has yet to comment on the project. The singer recently told the story of his early life in his own words with 2013's Autobiography.
