The Red Bull Music Academy's Bass Camp residency in Montreal kicked off on Thursday night (February 26). After a brief meet-and-greet between participants, a convoy headed over to la Société des Arts Technologiques for an evening of live dance music.

ANGO, the project of Toronto's Andrew Gordon Macpherson, led the night with his highly danceable, endlessly melodic dance set. Though his production was nothing to scoff at and certainly inspired a great response from the audience, it was his live vocal work that stood out the most from his pop-leaning house set.

Macpherson proved a worthy lead-in for headline Jacques Greene, who led the crowd through a truly inspired batch of songs that demonstrated why he's become a fixture in his genre. In addition to his own material, which ebbed and flowed with explosive bass, pensive melody and four-on-the-floor beat work, he kept the crowd moving with a solid selection of remixes. These included irresistible dips into the zeitgeist (Drake's "Know Yourself," anyone?) and less obvious fare (Greene's amped-up remix of Autre Ne Veut's "Play by Play" was a definite highlight).

The Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp has brought some of Canada's top producers to Montreal for the weekend, where they'll study each other's techniques, hear lectures from key producers (Greene included) and collaborate. Here, at Le SAT, they started the weekend right, drinking deep from a Canadian producer at the top of his game.
